Welcome to Roots & Resilience Consulting

Where heart meets strategy, and healing meets education.

Hi, I’m Felicia Pettiford, the founder of Roots and Resilience Consulting—and I’m so glad you’re here.

After nearly two decades in early childhood education, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible challenges and rewards of working with young children, especially those navigating trauma. I know what it feels like to pour into your students while trying to hold yourself together. That’s why I created this space—for educators like you.

Roots and Resilience is all about equipping early childhood educators with the tools, strategies, and support they need to thrive. I specialize in trauma-informed teaching, social-emotional learning, and healing-centered practices that don’t just support the whole child—they support the whole teacher, too.

Whether you're trying to understand your students’ behavior on a deeper level, build stronger partnerships with families, or simply find ways to breathe and stay grounded in your own work—I want to help you do just that. You don't have to navigate this work alone. I'm here to walk alongside you.

Together, we’ll plant strong roots so you—and your students—can rise with resilience.

The why behind the what…

I was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, a vibrant and diverse community that, like many urban areas, faces significant challenges impacting its residents. As a child, I endured multiple traumas, including abuse, parental divorce, relocating across states, and navigating unfamiliar cultural environments. Throughout these difficult experiences, the stability of education and the compassion of dedicated teachers served as a lifeline, guiding me through dark times. The "village" of educators who supported and nurtured me was instrumental in shaping my path and preventing me from becoming another statistic, given the socioeconomic and cultural barriers I faced as a poor, Black, Latina female.   In my professional journey, I have dedicated myself to teaching in large urban communities predominantly composed of children of color. I am acutely aware of the many traumas and challenges these children encounter daily. It is unrealistic to expect educators to focus solely on academics when students walk into our classrooms facing food insecurity, homelessness, domestic violence, abuse, neglect, or major life transitions that affect their well-being.   I founded Roots and Resilience Consulting to empower educators to effectively support children experiencing active trauma while also addressing their own secondary trauma. My aim is to create a space for educators to share experiences, resources, and strategies, and to ensure they feel seen, heard, and valued in their mission to teach and advocate for their students. The vision for Roots and Resilience is to restore humanity to education and bring the village together to support all children.
